Mrs. Calvernetta Williams Brown, M. Ed.
Thank you to all of my students who nominated me to be the SCEA Teacher of the Month. I won for the month of November 2010 and represent the state as the SCEA November Teacher of the Month. I am very humbled to be the recipient of this honor and hope I continue to live up to your expectations as we both strive for excellence!

It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to Physical Science at Ridge View High School – Home of the Blazers!  A place where you can see how the VIEW is changing! It is now time to charge into yet another opportunity made available for you here in Richland School District Two.

Physical Science Course Description
Through the use of extensive problem solving exercises, and laboratory work, this course emphasizes the basic concepts of physical science.  Topics presented include measurement, laboratory safety and techniques, properties of matter, atomic structure and the periodic table, chemical bonding, nuclear science, motion, work and power, waves, light, color and sound.  A final exam will be given to every student enrolled in this course, and the score will count 20% of the final grade.

Class Expectations:  All students should:

    • Respect the teacher’s right to teach and the student’s right to learn.
    • The Academic Integrity Policy will be enforced in my class at all times.
    • Be on time for class.  Students who are tardy should report to the closest tardy location to the classroom.  For portable 10, this location is right in front of the auditorium. Students will be given a pass to class and will be expected to serve 3 hours as a consequence for being tardy within 7 days of the assigned tardy.
    • Be prepared for class each day.  Bring the textbook, loose-leaf notebook paper, sharpened pencil, a 3-ring binder, and any assignment that is due.  You will need a calculator: the TI- 83 is recommended by the Math Department.  Take all of your belongings with you when you leave class.
    • Be where you are supposed to be during class time.  This means during regular classroom situations you are to be in your seat.  During labs you are to be at your lab station.
    • Pay attention and do what you are supposed to be doing.
    • Speak when it is appropriate and speak appropriately.
    • Dress appropriately for lab and follow all appropriate safety precautions.

NOTE TO STUDENTS & PARENTS

Dated August 18, 2011

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!

This week is an introduction to the Physical Science class. We will begin with an overview of our syllabus. Great emphasis will be placed on the course expectation, curriculum, pacing guide, and consequences for non-compliance.

Our first packet of work is the Lab Safety packet. You will notice that it is listed to the left of the screen. As promised, I will provide copies of the first packet but I expect for you to click on the links for units 1 - 13 to print off your own packets. If you do not have a printer at home, please make sure that you tell me prior to us starting the unit or email me so I can have it ready for you when we come to class. Those students that print off their packets on the first day will recieve a homework pass to use at their leisure.

Block 1-2

Lab Safety test is scheduled for Monday, August 22, 2011. You will need the Unit 1 A packet on Monday, August 22, 2011 as well.

Periods 3 & 5

Lab Safety Test is scheduled for Tuesday, August 23, 2011. You will need the Unit 1 A packet on Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Please check parent portal regularly for updates on assignment scores and averages.
